Making an ad is not as easy as it seems. It takes many failed drafts to finally make one that looks half decent. The ad is specified to a certain audience and the design is meant specifically for these batteries.


Target Audience:

The target audience was very specific for this design ad. I used a random generator to pick the target audience, which gave me a tough time coming up with my own design. The target audience was males in their mid 20s who are single and have a bachelors degree. Their income is $60,00-$89,000. The two types of advertisements were a TV static ad and a Web/blog static ad. The TV ad was easy to make but fitting the whole design inside the blog ad was incredibly difficult. So I decided to make the ad a workout ad, which appeals to the majority of the target audience.


My design idea was hard to come up with. I originally had an ad using the same slogan, but had an image of someone eating batteries. I then thought of this idea, which is a guy working out. I added the battery picture to the end of the weight to make it seem like he was lifting the battery. For the slogan I wanted to make people think that they could get power from these batteries if they had them powering their electronics. I chose black and white for the color to make the ad look more intense.


In conclusion, making advertisement is a lot harder than it seems. Making sure to include the target audience when making the design is crucial. Being careful in making sure the design has one focal point is very important too. The alignment and typography is incredibly important in making the design whole. Next time you see an advertisement make sure to think of how much work and thought the person who made it put into it.


Designing Icons in 2017

Icons in today’s time are made as simple as possible. If you compare it to icons made in the 2000s, then you will see how simplified they have gotten. I made 6 icons with the theme of space in mind. I tried to make them as simple as possible and use the right color scheme for them as well.



Target Audience

I made these icons with the thought of appealing to millennials. Space is becoming more of a popular thing. Photography of the night sky with the stars is becoming more of a hobby now. Another thing I see a lot is simple space tattoos. Most of them are black and white, but I added color to mine to make them seem more of a set. I wanted to appeal to the students in their 20s or High school students.



For the symbols themselves I chose them because they all have a space or science feel to them. At first, I had them all black and white at first, but added color after thinking it looked too boring. I used a lot of round corners in each icon so that they all work together. I added the little black curved lines in some of the designs to make them more interesting to look at. I chose the colors green, purple, yellow, and red because they went well with each design. I kept the middle Icon the only red one because it ties all the other icons to it.


Overall, the icons I made were simple and easy to make. As long as you know how to use illustrator it isn’t hard making these simple line icons. Using the types of design is something to practice and get use to. Make sure you know your audience before you start and go from there. Playing around with each icon there are a million possibilities.

Designing a Magazine Spread

This magazine spread was a lot of work to create from scratch in InDesign. I had to scrap many drafts that I had made in the first place. With this final design I easily appeal to the target audience and used good design techniques to make an amazing spread, while applying all the requirements to the project.



In my design I used the requirements as guidelines and something that would help my creative flow instead of looking at it as rules. I used two columns for my 600 word article. I used a text wrap in my colorful design. In the cover photo, two contrasting texts are very clearly there. I took two of my own photos on my camera. Used the pull quote to tie in the article.


Target Audience

The targeted audience for my magazine spread is meant for kids of younger age or teens. It had bright colors and interesting design that draws them in. I used a design that looks adventurous and happy.



In the cover photo I had decided to go with a sans serif font for theĀ  ‘Great’ and a script for the ‘Adventure!’. I found these two fonts online and thought they worked so well together. I wasn’t going to add the line around the inside, but I thought it gave it more of a magazine look so I added it in.

The design for the spread was hard to come up with. I liked the idea of keeping the background white, which gives it a classic look. For the text wrap I decided to use lines going across the page. I used the colors directly from the sunset picture. I added one line at the bottom to make it look more tied together. With my photography, I used some pictures of sunsets because pictures like that tend to look pretty with minimal effort of shooting them. I had to play around with the fonts, leading, kerning and all that for this good layout of the words.


I’m really proud of myself for learning how to utilize design to my best ability and create this wonderful looking spread. I love the way it turned out, and now have a better understanding of InDesign.

Using Photography Principles to Your Benefit

Digital photography is growing more and more popular in todays world. Many beginners find themselves frustrated over poorly shot photos. Three things to keep in mind are: Rule of Thirds, Leading Lines, and Depth of Field.

My good friend Whitley is a professional photographer and did a boho kind of themed wedding. I used her photos from this wedding to show my examples of the three tips.

I feel like Whitley really captured these elements in all of her photographs. I suggest checking out the rest of the wedding pictures to get an idea of how well she utilized these three key components; just click on the link below any of the pictures.


Rule of Thirds

In these pictures the rule of thirds might not seem so apparent as it is in other pictures you may see on the internet. But as you can see in the left picture the two people are perfectly on the vertical lines of the grid. Their heads are about on the crosses of the two lines too. In the picture on the right the man is directly on the vertical line and the car is more in the right of the picture rather then in the center of the picture.

I copied the Rule of Thirds from Whitley’s photograph above by putting the subject more to the right of the photograph rather then the center. Something I notice now is that I should have lowered the camera a little to have her head directly on the cross of the lines.


Leading Lines

Whitley easily snapped a shot of the whole scene before the ceremony. Sometimes photographers or people viewing the photograph won’t notice the element right away. The leading lines in this picture are subtle and really ties the whole picture together.

I tried to copy Whitley’s picture by only using Leading Lines subtly. It was just a picture of my feet I captured and the hammock had nice leading lines in the side. You could even say that it has a little bit of Depth of Field on the sides of the hammock leading out. Sometimes using the elements isn’t as hard as people think. You can do it without even knowing it.


Depth of Field

Whitley was capturing the art of the decoration at this wedding and managed to use Depth of Field to her advantage. Depth of Field can easily help bring focus to something in the picture and adds perspective on a picture. In the right picture the reserved sign is clearly the focus of the picture, but the blurry background can still give context as to that it is at a wedding.

For this picture I physically got close to the subject which helps add depth of field. On my camera I have options to change the depth of field, which can be done easily. Usually depth of field is hard to achieve without a DSLR camera, but a lot of phones today are gaining the option to change the aperture.


Better Photos

If you stay conscious about where you aim the camera, what you are going for, and what the subject is; then you can gain so much more out of each photo you snap. Whether you are taking a picture with a phone or taking professional shots, using these three elements in your pictures can change the quality by a lot!

The Skinny Beauty Studio

I was searching through logos to try to find a good photo that had used typography well and found this one. There was no designer or any information about it. I’m not sure what the origination is and couldn’t find any information about that either. I can assume that it is either a salon or some modeling agency.



The first typeface shown in this logo design is Script. It is easily spotted and easily known as script because of the way it looks curly and could be done with a calligraphy pen. This script is connected between the H and the E. It is only the one word in this logo which adds a nice flair.



The second and only other typeface in this design is Sans Serif. The letters do not have the serifs on any end of the letters. As well as that, all the letters have one stroke, there is no thick or thin part of the letters. This typeface is easily recognizable such as the previous one. The rest of the words in this design uses Sans Serif.



Using these two typefaces the design has made such a great contrast. With the word “The” using script it really shows the difference between the rest of the design. Let’s say they had used Sans Serif for all the words, then the logo wouldn’t be as appealing to the eye. The script adds a flair to the whole design. The designer also used the line around skinny to create an amazing contrast. It helps pop the word skinny out of the whole design.


Overall, I think picking the right typefaces to use together is a huge part of designing. Picking the wrong ones could lead to a bad design. This designer did an amazing job with typeface and using a good contrast between them. They also did a good job using the other design principles to create an eye pleasing design.

The Art of Fallout 4



Fallout 4 is an action role-playing video game. It is available on PlayStation or Xbox One systems. The designer Emil Pagliarulo is an amazing artist who designed the cover (shown above) and designed the characters and graphics of the game. He also helped creating the designs used in Skyrim and Fallout 3.




This designer used the contrast element by making one side of the cover light and the other side dark. This makes the design feel more like it has depth. It shows where the source of the light is coming from and makes particular parts of the picture pop out, such as the words and the masked face.




On the mask there are two tubes coming down, on one side the tube has lines as if it was on graph paper or being edited. The designer used repetition here by adding these lines to show the texture of the mask and the tube. I think this use of repetition is very clever because it isn’t obvious but it greatly adds to the design.




The words at the top of the design and the top of the mask are in very well placed alignment. I think the designer was very aware of where they were placing both. Imagine if the designer had put the words flushed to the left or to the right. The whole cover wouldn’t work as well.




The designer might have played around with the words a lot before deciding on this specific design. The box around the ‘Fallout 4’ really makes the letters stand out even though they are in close proximity to ‘The Art of’. And even though the ‘Fallout 4’ part stands out more, you can still obviously see that all the words are connected because of the proximity.




One of the first things I noticed was how on one side of the cover there is a darkness and the other side a lightness. I really love how the designer kept the shadow and light on the words as well as the background and mask. As you can see where I circled the letters are a darker shade of grey and it isn’t all at once either, it’s a gradual shadow on the letters. Very impressive.


Overall, I think the designer was very proud of the end product. I’m sure this design may have taken a while to put all together. Each on of the principles is well shown in this one cover and I think it is obvious where the designer put the principles and that they were aware of using each principle for their benefit.
